There is a great public transport system operating throughout Australia
RAILWAYS, light rail, mono-rail, trams, BUSES and COACHES, small planes, large planes, helicopters, jet planes, jet boats, ferry's, river catamarans, paddle boats, cars and buses not to mention CARAVANS, motor homes, motor trailers, mini buses, rent a cars, push bikes and trail bikes.
YOU NAME IT! - WE HAVE IT! Today you can move around Australia without any difficulty. There is a great transport system operating throughout Australia.
For many years the six main states operated separate and un-compromising Rail and Bus operations. Today with the growth of tourism in the country there is much more co-operation between all the various transport systems.
Australian Railways Services
Each state still operates its own railway but travelling between the CAPITAL CITIES by rail is affordable and very comfortable. There are also the classic Railways that now operate for the tourist dollars including the re-juvenated Ghan that runs between Adelaide and Darwin, the Indian Pacific that criss-crosses the country from SYDNEY to PERTH and the relatively new Queensland Tilt Train services running north from BRISBANE to Rockhampton and CAIRNS and the OUTBACK that runs west to the tourist centre of Longreach.
All the state Railway services have associate bus companies linking services to the railways and these are generally found on the rail services websites below.

New South Wales Rail Services
Sydney CityRail Services operate the Sydney metropolitan rail services extending to Newcastle and the Blue Mountains. Countrylink operate the interstate services from Sydney to Melbourne, Sydney to Brisbane and Sydney to Canberra.
Countrylink also runs the country services to the NSW towns of Armidale - and the University of New England - Moree, Broken Hill, Griffith and Dubbo. You will find most major NSW country towns are enroute to these destinations. Other towns are linked with bus services operated by associate companies.

Queensland Rail Services
The new Tilt Train now operates on the line north of Brisbane to Cairns. This new train service started operating in the late 1980's and with the addition of new Tilt Trains and upgrading of the line all the way to Cairns it is a great way to see the tropical state. The metropolitan services around Brisbane are of the highest standard having received a major uplift with the Commonwealth Games and Brisbane Expo in the nineteen-eighties. Most services run every 20 minutes weekdays and 30 minutes on the weekends and public holidays. In both the city and country bus services link the satellite townships.

Victorian Rail and Bus Services
V-Line operates all train services in metro and country Victoria including linked bus services. Although some rail services have been excluded from the the network over the decades much of the state is still accessible by good rail services.

South Australian Rail and Bus Services
When visiting the beautiful city of Adelaide it is worth taking the tram to Glenelg just for the trip. However at the end of the line is a wonderful centre of food and shopping right alongside the beautiful Adelaide beaches. There is also a wonderful train trip to be had going up into the ADELAIDE HILLS to visit Belair.
Country South Australia is serviced by the major rail routes of the Indian Pacific [to Sydney and Perth], Ghan [to Alice Spings and Darwin] and the Overlander [to Melbourne] with a variety of budget and First Class Services.

Western Australian Rail, Bus and Ferry Services
Perth has arguably the very best rail metro service in the country, with clean, fast moving and on-time trains operating through the main suburbs and south to Mandurah, at peak times every TWO minutes along selected lines.
There are also country services east to Kagoorlie and south to Bunbury with talk now starting in earnest of a re-opening of the Albany passenger rail service, a very popular route in its time.
