Melbourne Beaches
MELBOURNE AND ITS BEACHES
Melbourne City is almost right on the waters edge like just about every other major capital city. It is situated on Port Phillip Bay and the Melbourne City dwellers just love it and use it. Melbourne's closest beaches are
not surf beaches but they are just fantastic for swimming and fishing, and they goes for miles. Most have these colourfully painted changing sheds that seem left over from another era and they sit on the shoreline just back from the water.
They are privately owned, quite valuable and it is very hard to obtain one. They stand proudly year after year waiting for their owners to return for the next fun day at the beach.
Eastern Beach is a famous sea-bathing and swimming complex on Corio Bay, on the western side of Port Phiollip Bay near Geelong, more of a family style beach housing pools with water-play equipment, with a walk around promenade and a shallow pool for the kids.
It is a good idea to take the picnic basket, and enjoy a barbecue there. Other beaches include Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Ocean Grove and St.Kilda and Barwon Heads.

Victoria has world class surf beaches not too far from Melbourne. Bells Beach on the Great Ocean Road to the west is a prime example. The World Surfing Championships and titles have been held there more than once. Bells Beach - when working - offers
the surfer one of the best reef surf breaks in the world. Bells Beach featured in the iconic surfing movie Point Break and for those interested there is The Surf World Museum at nearby Beach Road Torquay.
Australian beaches are very inviting, but they can also be treacherous. Do not be fooled and if you are unsure DO NOT ENTER THE WATER. Always swim at a patrolled beach, particularly at the Surf Beaches. Volunteer Surf Life Savers are well trained to save lives, but cannot if they cannot see you and it therefore is strongly recommended that you swim between the flags at all times.
