To the north-west from Melbourne, seemingly separating the lush southern hills from the oft-times desert-like Mallee lise a ridge that is the southern most reach of the Great Dividing Range - The Grampians. Near the famous Halls Gap nearby town of Stawell are unique walking and hiking trails but be careful, you can get lost easily out there. Be sure you take plenty of water and plenty of film, sorry er, an extra memory stick for the camera.

The Grampians, one of the most interesting parts of Australia. The aboriginal tribes were the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung peoples who remained in the area for some 30 thousand years before the white man settled. The wild sandstone formations form the western extremity of the Great Dividing Range the region is famous for its natural wonders and associated outdoor pursuits. You will find the Brambuk Cultural Centre about two Km from Halls Gap and it operated by the Koorie communities, of the Wimmera and south west Victoria, who provide a wonderful insight into its early heritage.
Inside the centre among many other things there rare displays of traditional Koorie art, spears, boomerangs and other weapons and tools. These people who are ancestors of the tribes know and understand the area like no others and can organise to have you taken on an informed tour of the Koorie rock art sites.

Interestingly the Grampians are named after the mountain range in Scotland, that will please our Scottish friends. The name came about because of their similarity, as seen by the Scottish explorer, Major Mitchell who explored and climbed them in 1836.

The Grampians are very near the famous Halls Gap and the nearby town of Stawell where there are very unique walking and hiking trails. WARNING care will need to be taken people have been lost in these areas.
