Brush Tailed Possum

Australian Brush-Tailed Possum

Often considered a pest it is little known that these wonderfully friendly furry creatures are actually quite helpful as they sometimes feed on the stray mouse and rat and seldom live more than one to a territory.

Therefore once your 'local' possum is suitably housed away from the ceiling in your home they can be quite a helpful pet to have scavenging around at night and will come very close to be fed, making them popular with children.

Although they are generally disease free as far as being a danger to humans they still need to be treated with some caution as they will unintentionally scratch or bite while being fed. They can often be seen with their young hanging onto their mothers as they bound along a tree branch, fence or the verandah railing. The best known Australian possum is the common Brushtail as it has adapted very well to living in our cities and suburbs. As the urban sprawl consumes the bush and suburbs develop they overtake natural areas, so animals are unfortunately forced to live in much close quarters with people.

This can be delightful as we are privileged to be able to observe and watch our native animals at such close quarters, living with wildlife, however, has its own special issues.

The Brushtail possum sleeps during the day usually in a tree hollow nest or between rocks with a covering and comes out at dusk and roams for food making it nocturnal. The adult it is about the size of a domestic cat, has a pointed face, longish oval ears, a pretty pink nose and bushy black tail.
