Life in the Land Down Under From Centuries Past Displayed for the Present

Aboriginal Art and Culture
Art and Culture play a very big role in the indigenous lifestyle. Like the American Indian the Indigenous Aboriginal of Australia has
an inbred spirituality that is very unfullfilled in modern Western European influenced Australian society. The original Australian inhabitants were not bound by the needs
and restraints of possession and time - they 'belonged to the earth' and nothing belonged to people.
There was no '9 to 5', or as in the case of many modern Australians lives '5 till 9'. They worked hard for each other and for their families when needed and spent time
teaching their children the laws of their people in the Dreamtime Stories,a law that was regarded by some writers as being amongst the most influential and successful of that
time. Unfortunately the white man failed to appreciate what the Indigenous Australian had to offer, in fact he thought that he was here to teach the 'natives' how to behave!
How ludicrous was that!
The experience of Benelong, an influential Aboriginal leader of the 1700's was extremely interesting. Here was a man who impressed Governor Phillip with his intelligence and wit and
became his strangely close friend, was taken to London, showed the best of what 'modern civilisation had to offer and when he came back to Botany Bay, went back
to his own ways, ways he considered superior to that of the white man.
Those ways are still taught by many in the Aborigianl Communities, and where they are taught successfully, the communities do well.
The stories are also portrayed in the music, dance and art of the people, a culture that is only now starting to be recognised for the talent that it really is.
