THE AUSTRALIAN FLAG

"Flags of Australia"!

"There are a vast number of flags in Australia including
our famous green and gold boxing kangaroo".

Australian Flag

The Australian flag consists of three main elements.

The background is navy blue with the Union Jack in the upper left hand side or the first quarter. The Union Jack denotes Australia's historical ties and links with Great Britain. The constellation of the five stars is the Southern Cross. The Commonwealth Star or Federation Star is placed under the Union Jack and it has seven points which denotes the six states and the combined territories of the Australian Commonwealth.

The current Australian Flag came into being on 1st January 1901.
A public competition was held and the current flag was selected from the 30,000 designs received. It should be noted that although the flag was selected in 1901 and gazetted, in 1903, it was not adopted as the definitive Australian flag until 1954.

The Aboriginal Flag top right, consists of three main elements and colours; Black - Red and Yellow.

The black represents the native Australian people, or Aboriginals. The red represents the earth and the Aboriginals spiritual relationship with the land. The yellow represents the life giving sun.

The flag was designed by an Aboriginal, Harold Thomas, an artist, in 1971, allowing the people have a symbol for their race and to enable them to show there true identity and make them more visible as the first Australians.

In view of the flags importance in Australian society, the flag was proclaimed a "Flag of Australia" in July 1995 and is proudly displayed and flown today.

The Boxing Kangaroo Flag is well accepted by Australians a symbol of our strength and our ability to fight on. The kangaroo never takes a back ward step, ever! The flag is flown at sporting events and could be used in battle. It is a flag that represents the Australian sprit.

Australia Flag Information

The dark or navy blue back ground colour on the Australian Flag was selected from the British Blue Ensign. The colour was use in colonial times for many of the flags of the colonies and lands south of the equator.

Situated in the top right hand section of the Australian flag is the original flag of Britain the Union Jack. The Union Jack is there because Australia was a colony of England.

The stars of The Southern Cross were placed on the right hand side of our flag. This constellation of stars is visible from all of Australia's states and territories. It should be noted that this constellation of five stars can be seen only from the southern hemisphere and is a wonderful reminder of Australia's position on the earth and in times gone by the Southern Cross was vital to early ships' navigation.

The largest star on the Australian Flag is the Commonwealth Star (sometimes known as The Federation Star) which is under the Union Jack. This seven-pointed star represents the unity of the six states and the territories and symbolizes the federation of Australia which came into force on 1 January 1901.
