What's Australia like?
During the daylight hours there is footy, tennis, cricket, golf, sailing or visit the golden beaches and lay in the warm inviting sun, take a swim while watching the guys and girls play and surf. Go whale watching. Take a bush walk. Travel out to the outback and have a dip in a billabong or climb a mountain, bungi jump, skidive, board a paddle boat and travel the fabolous Murray River, jump on a train or bus and visit the sights or ski the snow fields. Take your friends to the zoo, meet and pet our kangaroos and koalas. Sleep tight at night in a warm bed knowing you are in a safe and comfortable dreaming place in peace and that is only the FIRST DAY!

Australians are a super friendly people and we all enjoy making new friends. Our whole country is full of people from all over the world, so you will not feel left out! Come and spend time make new mates and enjoy a barbie (barbaque), throw on a few lamb chops, sausages, steak and prawns and the sweet alluring smell alone will attract others. Hey don't forget happy hour!

Many Australians enjoy a glass or two of beer or wine, we brew some of the best beers in the world and our wine country, well you just have to go there don't you! Australia produces some of the very best wines in the world today and there are cellar doors open for you to visit on just about any day.

What's the food like - What do Aussies eat?
Because of the diversity of the country's population and the different cultures of the peoples you can and will find a great selection of all types of wonderful cuisine. Australians have adopted foods from England, the Americas, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Asia. When in Australia you should taste Aussie damper - the lamington - a good old custard tart and not forgetting our natonal emblem the kangaroo; the lean kangaroo meat is a delicacy.

What is the weather like in Australia?
Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are up side down or reversed to that of the northern hemisphere. Our summer starts in December. Australia's climate is just about always generally very pleasant. There are no real 'extreme' climates in Australia; Sydney and Perth, while distance separates them, they both have very enjoyable temperatures all-year-round. The southern capital cities of Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart are a little cooler while Brisbane and Darwin enjoy a northern tropical climate.

Can I obtain an Australian driving licence?
Australian driving licenses are administered at state/territory level, and regulations vary as a result. You will normally need to obtain a state license within 3 months of taking up residence in the state - you need to check to see if you can use your overseas license in the meantime. Visit the Australian Embassy or consulate in your country before leaving.

What are the power outlets and voltage like?
Australia has an electrical current of 220/240 volts and the AC is 50 Hz. It is a very good idea to purchase adaptors to suit Australia before you leave home. It should also be noted that not all electrical goods purchased overseas will operate within Australia.

What does the Australian Flag look like?
The Australian National Flag has three elements on a navy blue background; they are the British the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross. The Union Jack in the upper left corner acknowledges the history of British settlement. Below the Union Jack is a white Commonwealth or Federation star. It has seven points representing the unity of the states and the territories of the Commonwealth of Australia. The star is also featured on the Commonwealth Coat of Arms. The Southern Cross is shown on the fly of the flag in white. This constellation of five stars can be seen only from the southern hemisphere and is a reminder of Australia's geography.

Australia's national anthem Advance Australia Fair was declared in 1984 replacing God Save the Queen. There are many people around the world that believe that Waltzing Matilda is the national song, not true. Yet Waltzing Matilda remains a much loved folk song by Australians.

What are Australia's National Colours?
The national colors, green and gold, hold a treasured place in the Australian imagination. Long associated with Australian sporting achievements, the national colors have strong environmental connections. Gold conjures images of Australia's beaches, mineral wealth, grain harvests and the fleece of Australian wool. Green evokes the forests, eucalyptus trees and pastures of the Australian landscape. Green and gold are also the colors of Australia's national floral emblem - the golden wattle.

What is the official National Emblem?
Australia's national floral emblem is the Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha Benth.) When in flower the golden wattle displays the national colours, green and gold. As one species of a large genus of flora growing across Australia, the golden wattle is a symbol of unity. Wattle is purpose-built to withstand Australia's droughts, winds and bushfires. The resilience of wattle represents the spirit of the Australian people. In recent times, the golden wattle has been used as a symbol of remembrance and reflection. On national days of mourning, for example, Australians are invited to wear a sprig of wattle. The golden wattle has been used in the design of Australian stamps and many awards in the Australian honours system. A single wattle flower is the emblem of the Order of Australia.

What is the Australia's official gem stone?
Australia's national gemstone is the opal, a stone famous across the world for its brilliant colors. In Indigenous stories, a rainbow created the colors of the opal when it touched the earth. Opal, also known to Indigenous people as the fire of the desert, is a powerful symbol of Australia's arid interior. Australia is home to the world's highest quality, precious opal. The most famous is black opal from Lightning Ridge in New South Wales. Black opal has a color play of red, green, blue, violet, magenta or yellow against a dark background.
